Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and lies on the north bank of the Tagus Estuary, on the European Atlantic coast. It is the westernmost city in continental Europe. With half a million population, it is also the biggest city in the country.
What to do
Lisbon is also one of the oldest cities in the world and has been ruled by different people during their history such as the Phoenicians, the romans, the german tribes, the arabs and the spaniards. It is a city full of history and with a vast architectural patrimony. The main attractions to see are Sao Jorge’s Castle (the old fortress located on top of the old town), 25th of April bridge (built by dictator Salazar and sister bridge of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge), Praça do Comercio (the main square of the city) and Alfama neighbourhood (the most traditional area of town with strong moorish influence for its narrow streets and tiled façades).
Built on seven hills and facing the ocean, Lisbon also has a unique skyline an wonderful viewpoints called “Miradouros” that enchants travellers. Among them, you shouldn’t miss Santa Luzia, Sao Pedro de Alcantara, da Graça and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol.
Wheather
Lisbon enjoys a warm climate with mild winters and very warm summers. This is the reason why is chosen as a tourist and as a retirement destination by many Europeans. Due to being so close to the sea, you will be able to enjoy wonderful sandy beaches in the area like the seaside resort of Cascais or Costa da Caparica.
Airport
Lisbon and Portugal’s largest International Airport is Aeroporto da Portela (LIS) which his very close to the city and very well connected by bus, metro and taxi. The metro network is very poor and bus and tram system are sometimes not very well connected to certain touristic areas. Therefore, it is recommendable to rent a car from any of the car rental companies at the airport or downtown. They offer very cheap prices and will allow to to move freely within the city and enjoy a visit to the neigbouring old mountain city of Sintra.
